Anatomical Venus
The Anatomical Venus arose in the 18th and 19th centuries. Life-size wax women lying in repose, torsos flayed open with their entrails exposed.
A grotesque collision of art and science.
Agony and ecstasy entwined.
The Little Death and the big death at once.
A Renaissance-era slasher flick.
J.G. Ballard’s Crash if it were scrawled in wax under the flicker of an oil lamp in a Florentine anatomy theatre.
That’s as close to a love song as I’ll ever write.
In recognition of this uncommon juxtaposition of Friday the 13th and Valentine’s Day (only once every nine years, on average), I’m offering up for public dissection a small fragment of a song in progress. Composed in ethereal synth and reverb-drenched dissonance.
Listen to a 12-second clip of “Anatomical Venus.”
